Faster cited research reports
Ai2, which develops open models for scientific work, has released AstaBrief 8B. The open-weights model turns a research question and retrieved literature excerpts into a cited report. Researchers can use it now as Fast mode in Asta or download it to run on their own infrastructure.
Ai2 reports that Fast mode averages 51.1 seconds per report, compared with 178.5 seconds for its Claude-powered Thinking mode. The full evaluation used older comparison models and has not been rerun against today’s frontier, so its most practical lesson is the workflow: generate a quick, sourced draft, then inspect whether each citation supports the scope of its claim.
Dots follow-up: better with work you control
A new hands-on test of OpenAI’s Dots found mixed results on consumer errands. Security checks interrupted an internet-service signup and an Ikea login, while the agent missed a free coworking tour and offered a $35 day pass instead.
The stronger demonstration came after reviewer Allison Johnson gave Dots access to her computer and website. She reports that it combined video clips into a file sized for social media and deployed her redesigned site, though the work required many permissions. Johnson conducted the test using a $100-per-month Pro account.
